The VC Market in North America
North America
Venture
capital is a huge
part of the world economy. In some places such as North America, venture capital firms have been around
for many years while in other areas such as the Middle East they are a relatively new phenomenon.
Groups like Effi Enterprises and other venture capital firms are
critical to the world economy because the investments that they make drive the
economy forward with new business creating new jobs and new products and
services. Venture capital is also important in that it helps to fund much of
the research and design that goes into the new technologies that help to
improve society and help out in fields as diverse as communications, medicine,
and security. Without venture capital many of the businesses’ products and
services we use everyday would have been simply too expensive to bring to
market.
What is it?
It’s important to have a good understanding of exactly what venture capital is. When someone has an idea for a business or a product that they want to create they need a large sum of money right off the bat to get the project going. These entrepreneurs need cash to pay for labor, raw materials, rent, etc. One of the biggest reasons that businesses fail within the first few years is because they don’t have enough capital to cover their expenses until the money starts to come in. Venture capital can help these entrepreneurs by giving them the money they need to get the business going. In exchange, the venture capital firm will be given a percentage of equity in the new startup business. This type of funding is different from a traditional business loan because it does not collect interest and the group doing the lending actually owns part of the company that they are lending to.
These types of venture capital transactions are generally for early-stage, high potential but also high-risk ventures. They are aimed at supplying businesses that appear to have great earning potential with the capital they need to grow, often rapidly. Businesses that have a novel or unique idea but need cash to begin manufacturing are often perfectly suited for venture capital.
The venture capital firms make their money by owning equity in the companies they are lending to. As a company becomes profitable, it shares a percentage of its profits with the venture capital firm. Venture capital is an example of private equity and is mainly used before a company goes public.
Outlook for Venture Capital Around the World
A recent study that questioned 440 venture capital firms across the United States, Europe, Latin America, the Middle East, and Asia showed that even though investors are not confident about the economy at large, they are confident that there will continue to be excellent prospects for investing. These investment opportunities will largely come from the United States, Brazil, China, and Israel. Most of the investors who responded to the survey came from outside the United States, which marks the growth of venture capital globally.
Global investors are feeling the most confident in the industries relating to cloud computing, social media, and software. Industries that have been favorable in recent years such as medical tech, clean tech, and biopharmaceutical industries are drawing a mixed response from investors, with some seeing them as potentially strong investment opportunities while others are shying away. Investments in these sectors in Brazil and China will be lucrative opportunities for investors as these countries have many startups focusing on these industries.
The Role of Government
Global investors still remain cautious regarding the abilities of their home governments to enact policies that will support investments in the coming years. Some countries such as Brazil, Canada, Israel, and the Netherlands have great confidence that their governments will support legislation that will help attract investments while investors in India, Australia, and Japan seem to have little confidence that their governments will support the right policies to encourage investment. Confidence in the role of government is also low in some places in Europe. This is especially true in the United Kingdom, Germany, and France, where the lowest investor confidences were found.
Cyber Defense
Venture capitalists have long been known for supporting the latest in cutting edge technologies. With the growing number of international cyber attacks taking place on government, military, and private sector entities, advancements in these security technologies are sure to be a focus for venture capitalists globally.
